Lame Hen

The chick was picked up by my youngest sister while she was looking after the buffaloes.

I could not figure out how loudly the kids had shouted from the backs of their buffaloes forcing the eagle to loosen its claw and let go of the wretched chicken. Oh to think what a wreck it was, dropped from such a height of dozens of meters. No other kids, except my youngest sister, then seven years old, were going to pick it up.

At first, my older sister told my youngest sister to throw it to the cat, kaiko; I preferred using it as a prize for the cat and Mumu, the dog, to fight over. My youngest sister was adamant against both proposals, and since she was the pet of the family, she got my mother's support. The chick was thus saved.

"Dogs heal their flesh wound, chickens heal their broken bones."It was a miracle to have survived after such a fall, and more or less in good shape like that! So Lame chick was the most suitable name. She grew up with a pair of mismatched legs, one longer than the other, and her right wing sagging. That wretched shape proved a real misery when it came to struggling for ood and prey. She was an object for Kaiko and Mumu to torment. The cat, layhing in the sun, would strike a blow with her paw when Lame passed by. The dog looking up from his bone and bark real loud when he saw Lame searching for rice in a pile of straw. As for the brood of chickens, Lame appeared as a 'karma' unable to integrate into the community. Like all hens do, Lame would react on the slightest threat with total submission, hiding her head under her wing and limping past, only to fall every few steps, striving to get up and then stumbling again...She was growing steadily, though.

Then for a while, Lame was out of sight. She was searched for but soon forgotten by my sister who was preoccupied playing with her peers. It was just as summed she had been caught by fox, a wolf, or even by Kaiko or Mumu especially the later might turn fox.

Suddenly one morning, Lame reappeared in the courtyard, accompanied by a newly-hatched chick, her own chick. No one knew how Lame, with such a wretched shape like hers, could have borne the cock's weight when they made love chicken-style. No one knew where she had laid her egg. The Lame hen and her chick appeared unexpected among the brood and were accepted as a miracle. To think just what a hostile situation Lame alone was in before. Only the dog and the cat were against it.

It was a case of "ugly mother, beautiful daughter". The chick was growing fast into a beauty. Its feathers were very smooth and fine. Lame was very proud; she kept the choice morsels for her chick. About a month later another unexpected event happened. For reasons unknown, Kaiko, out of sunbathing, jumped down into the courtyard and pawed at the chick. The chick could do nothing but lie flat and wait for death. Right the, Lame arrived, leapt up, kicked at the cat's face and began to peck ferociously at it. Enormous as she was, the wicked cat was frightened out of her senses. She tried to duck the blows and dashed to her hideout with her tail between her legs. No one could understand how Lame managed to beat the cat with her deformed body.

Lame's deformity was soon forgotten and now she would take her place squarely in the courtyard, proudly calling for her chick, who was putting on flesh and growing all the more beautiful. The chick was now bigger than her mother.

Time passed by quickly. The rainy season arrived. Worms floated out of the flooded ground, serving as prey to the chickens. One day, Lame caught a big worm, pulled it out of the ground and called her chick out to share the game. The chick rushed to the scene, got hold of the worm, and ran away with it. Lame followed. But all a sudden, the chick turned around and gave Lame a big kick. Lame fell flat. She tried to get up but failed on the slippery ground.

After that, Lame returned to her old self, a complete wreck subject to torment from the cat and the dog. The brood of chicken kept her at a distance. Lame would stand alone in a corner of the courtyard from where she would occasionally cast a look at the fattest, prettiest hen in the brood which used to be her own chick.

To Remember Me

The day will come when my body will lie upon a white sheet neatly tucked under four corners of a mattress located in a hospital busily occupied with the living and the dying. At a certain moment a doctor will determine that my brain has ceased to function and that, for all intents and purposes, my life has stopped.

When that happens, do not attempt to instill artificial life into my body by the use of a machine. And don't call this my deathbed. Let it be called the Bed of life, and let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller lives..

Give my eyes to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face or love in the eyes of a woman. Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain. Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play. Give my kidneys to one who depends on a machine to exist from day to day. Take my bone, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk.

Explore every corner of my brain. Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that, someday, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her window.

Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the winds to help the flowers grow and blossom.

If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses and all prejudice against the others around me.

Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to god.

If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.

Good News

Robert De Vincenzo, the great Argentine golfer, once won a tournament and, after receiving the check and smiling for the cameras, he went to the clubhouse and prepared to leave. Some time later, he walked alone to his car in the parking lot and was approached by a young woman. She congratulated him on his victory and then told him that her child was seriously ill and near death. She did not know how she could pay the doctor's bill and hospital expenses.

De Vincenzo was touched by her story, and he took out a pen and endorsed his winning check for payment to the woman "Make some good days for the baby," he said as he pressed the check into her hand.

The next week, he was having lunch in a country club when a Profestional Golf Association official came to his table. "Some of the boys in the parking lot last week told me you met a young woman there after you won that tournament." De Vincenzo nodded. "Well," said the official, "I have news for you. She's a phony. She has no sick baby. She's not even married. she fleeced you, my friend."

You mean there is no baby who is dying?" said De Vincenzo.

       "That's right." said the official.

"That's the best news I've heard all week," De Vincenzo said.

Encouragement

Some of a greatest success stories of history have followed a word of encouragement or an act of  confidence by a loved one or a trusting friend. Had it not been for a confident wife, Sophia, we might not have listed among the great names of literature the name of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

When Nathaniel, a heartbroken man, went home to tell his wife that he was a failure and had been fired from his job, she surprised him with an exclamation of joy.

"Now," she said triumphantly, "you can write your book!"

"Yes," replied the man, with sagging confidence, "and what shall we live on while I am writing it?"

To his amazement, she opened a drawer and pulled a substantial amount of money.

"When on earth did you get that" he exclaimed.

"I have always known that you were a man of genius," she told him. "I knew that someday you would write a masterpiece. So every week, out of money you gave me for housekeeping, I saved a little bit. So here is enough to last us for one whole year."

From her trust and confidence came one of the greatest novels of American literature, The Scarlet Letter.

I takes so littler to make people happy.

Just a touch if we know how to give it,

Just a word fitly spoken....a slight readjustment of some bolt or pin or bearing in the delicate machinery of a soul.

Paco Come Home!

In a small Town in Spain, a man named Jorge had a bitter argument with his young son Paco. The next day, Jorge discovered that Paco's bed was empty - he had run away from home.

Overcome with remorse, Jorge searched his soul and realized that his son was more important to him than anything else. He wanted to start over. Jorge went to well-known store in the center of town and posted a large sign that read, "Paco, come home. I love you. Meet me here tomorrow morning."

The next morning Jorge went to the store, where he found no less then seven young boys named Paco who had also run away from home. They were all answering the call for love, hoping it was their father inviting them home with open arms.

No Charge

The little boy suddenly came up to his mother and handed her a piece of paper when she was busy in preparing dinner. After his mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it:

                  For cutting the grass                                $5.00

For cleaning up my room this week        $1.00

For going to the store for you                     . 50

                  For-babysitting my kid brother                   . 25

                  Taking out the garbage.                           $1.00

For getting a good report card.                $5.00

For cleaning up, and raking the yard.      $2.00

                  Total owned:                                            $14.75

After reading, his mother looked at him standing there, expectantly. She picked up the pen, turned the paper over and wrote:

Nine months I carried you while you were inside me:        No charge.

The time I've sat with you, doctored and prayed for you:   No charge

For the tears that you've caused through the years:              No charge

For all the nights that I couldn't sleep because of the worries I Knew were ahead: No charge.

For all the toy, food, clothes, that I gave to you through the years: there's No charge, son.

And when you add it all up, the full cost of real love is, No charge.

When the boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were great big old tears in his eyes. He looked straight at his mother and said, " Mom, I sure do love you."

And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote : "PAID IN FULL."

Tommy's Essay

Soon Tommy's parents, who had recently separated, would arrive for a conference on his failing schoolwork and disruptive behavior. Neither parent knew that I had summoned the other.

Tommy, an only child, had always been happy, cooperative, and an excellent student. How could I convince his father and mother that his recent failing grades represented a brokenhearted child's reaction to his adored parent's separation and pending divorce?

Tommy's mother entered and took one of the chairs I had placed near my desk. Then the father arrived. They pointedly ignored each other.

As I gave a detailed account of Tommy's behavior and schoolwork, I prayed for the right words to bring these two together to help them see what they were doing to their son. But somehow the words wouldn't come. Perhaps if they saw one of his smudged, carelessly done papers.

I found a crumpled, tear-stained sheet stuffed in the back of his desk. Writing covered both side, a single sentence scribbled over and over.

Silently, I smoothed it out and gave it to Tommy's mother. She read it and then without a word handed it to her husband. He frowned. Then his face softened. He studied the crawled words for what seemed an eternity.

At last, he folded the paper carefully and reached for his wife's out-stretched hand. She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him. My own eyes were brimming, but neither seemed to notice.

In his own way God had given me the words to reunite that family. He had guided me to the sheet of paper covered with the anguished outpouring of a small boy's troubled heart.

       "Dear Mother.....Dear Daddy....I love you...I love you...I love you."

10 Random Acts of Kindness …

10 Random Acts of Kindness ...
How great would the world be if everyone performed even just one random act of kindness every day? Having your kids, your spouse, or your friends partake in a “random acts of kindness day” is a great way to bond and spread happiness all at the same time! There is even a Random Acts of Kindness Foundation that was started which aims to help everyone create a better world by spreading awareness and increasing engagement in kind actions. I’m here to get you started with 10 Random Acts of Kindness that you can do!

1. Leave a Gift for Your Server

Coming from a former waitress, the life of a server is tough! Any little mistake can lower your tips and send you home with less money than needed to pay your bills. Not to mention you have to deal with nasty customers, the kitchen staff which is usually a bunch of men hitting on you, and having to work long hours with little to no breaks. I received a very generous tip one time and it made my whole day so much better! If you can afford it (and if your waitress/waiter was actually nice) leave an overly generous tip. If you can’t afford putting down the extra money, leave a small gift instead! Even if it’s some cookies or a small stuffed animal. I guarantee you just helped someone to get through the rest of their day with a smile. I advise leaving some tip however if you do decide to leave a gift, as an untipped table will come out of a waiter/waitresses’ tips at the end of the night.

2. Bring Flowers to The Hospital

The hospital is always filled with people who could use a reason to smile. There are a lot of elderly people who practically live in the hospital, patients who don’t have families to come visit them, or kids who are confined to the hospital and don’t get to live a regular childhood. Ask one of the nurses who could use the flowers the most. Then go visit the patient with the flowers and stay and talk for a while. Just showing that someone cares can be the boost that person needs to get through this hard time in their lives.

3. Bring a Homeless Person a Meal

A lot of people are wary about handing a homeless person money as they don’t know what they are going to spend it on. Most worry that it will go towards drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes instead of necessities like food or shelter. So a good way to know you’re helping them is by bringing them a meal. Either cook one yourself or buy one from a nearby restaurant. Another good thing to give the homeless are care package bags filled with some essentials that they may need such as a tooth brush, tooth paste, deodorant, snacks, soap, etc.

4. Put Coins into Expired Parking Meters

Have you ever walked by a parking meter whose time was up and there was a car in the spot? Instead of just walking by next time, add some extra coins to the meter. If you want to show the person whose car you just saved from a ticket that you helped, leave a note under the windshield wiper of the car telling them to pass on this random act of kindness. If you live by an area where there are a lot of parking meters, take a walk past them once a month with a bag of coins and have you or your kids find expired meters with cars still in the lot to put them in.

5. Pay for a Stranger’s Coffee

While paying for your morning coffee, give a little extra cash to the cashier and say you want to pay for the next person’s coffee. Then walk out before the next customer gets to the register and has time to object. It will be a great way for the other person to start their day! Not to mention the great feeling you’ll have for helping someone in a small way.

6. Pay The Toll for the Driver behind You

Following the last idea, if you have to go through a toll booth, give the teller the toll charge for the car behind you. The teller may look at you strange and even ask why. Just say to tell the other car that they were paid for by the person in front of them and to pass on this little random act of kindness in some way.

7. Leave Coins at a Vending Machine

In a plastic zip lock bag, leave a dollar in coins taped to a vending machine. Make sure to leave a note so others know why this was left. Something that says that this is a random act of kindness and that you hope the person who finds this money will perform a random act of kindness too.

8. Send a Gift Just Because

It’s rare that someone gives you a gift “just because” so when it actually does happen, it can instantly make your whole day better. There are always times where people feel like no one is thinking of them or cares about them. This small gift can help brighten someone’s mood and change their attitude. If you know a friend or family member is going through a tough time, send them a teddy bear or flowers “just because.” I guarantee they will appreciate knowing that someone is thinking of them. This is also good to do for your local librarians, firefighters, etc.

9. Leave a Dollar in a Library Book

Leave a dollar and a note to go along with it in a library book that you borrow and then return it. Yes, it’s just a dollar, but how excited do you get when you find even a tiny bit of money in those jeans you haven’t worn in a while? Plus a lot of people who do go to the library may not be able to afford buying books and could use any extra money that they can get. You can also hide dollars in other places for people to find. Have your kids hide them in the toys section of your local dollar store, or hide coins at your local playground for other kids to find.

10. Holiday Money Jar

At the beginning of a new year, have you and your family put all of their loose change into a large jar. When it is the end of the year in December, leave the jar and a note on the doorstep of someone who can use the extra money. Make sure to ring the doorbell and run! Then hide and watch to make sure your gift has been found. The look on their faces alone will make it all worth while.
If you noticed, after most of these ideas I made sure to write that you should leave a note encouraging others to pass on this random act of kindness. The only way to make the world a better place through random acts of kindness, is if it starts a chain reaction. You never know whose day you just changed or whose faith in humanity you helped to restore by performing such a small gesture. Have you ever performed a random act of kindness for someone? Tell me your story! (allwomenstalk)

Kindness

The Value of Manner

The tired ex-teacher edged closer in a long line to the counter at Target suppermarket. Her left leg became hurt because of too much moving, and she hoped she had taken all of her pills that the doctor gave her for the day: the ones for her high blood pressure, dizziness and a host of other illnesses of the old that she unluckily suffered. "Thank goodness, I retired years ago," she thought to herself. "I don't have the energy to teach the kids these days".

Just behind her, people in line to the counter were waiting for their turns to pay, she spotted a young man with two children and a young prenant wife. The teacher couldn't miss the tattoo on his arms and neck. He's been to prison, she thought and continued checking them out. His audacious face together with the moldly dusty T-shirt and baggy pants led her to surmise, "He must be a member of an infamous gang."

Despite that, the teacher tried to let the man go ahead of her, "It's OK. He goes with two kids."

"You can go first," she offered tenderly and stepped back to let them pass.

"No, you go first," he insisted to refuse.

"No, you have more people with you," said the teacher.

"We should respect our elders," the man pleaded to refuse. And with that, he gestured with a sweeping motion indicating the way for the woman.

A brief smile flickered on her lips as she hobbled in front of him. She in her manner decided she couldn't let the moment go, and she turned back to him, "Who taught you your good maners?.

"You did Mrs. Simpson, in third graded. You don't remember me?.
